Cognitive Behavioural Resources Managing our Thoughts We are not our thoughts, they are not worth beating ourselves up over unless we act on them or allow them to consume our lives. We need to learn how to discern the wise, mature and accurate thoughts from those which are unhelpful and destructive. Building Resilience Being resilient does not mean that a person does not experience difficulty or distress. In fact, the road to resilience is likely to involve considerable emotional distress. Resilience involves behaviours, thoughts and actions that can be learned and developed in anyone. The ABCDE Model The initial model in CBT was only ABC created by Albert Ellis. Since then the model has been expanded to incorporate the disputation of the belief and then the implementing of a new belief. The next time a similar event or situation occurs we will be using the new belief we installed from the previous event. Emotional Wellness Emotional expressions are universal and cross-cultural. People with healthy emotional wellness feel confident, in control of their feelings and behaviours, and can handle life challenges. Working through life challenges can build resilience as we learn that setbacks can be overcome. Well-being It consists of having positive relationships with others, personal mastery, autonomy, a feeling of purpose and meaning in life, and personal growth and development goals. It is attained by achieving a state of balance affected by both challenging and rewarding life events. Anxiety vs Stress These two terms can sometimes be used to mean or identify a situation where the coping mechanism is under threat. One may hear a person say “I am stressed” or “I cannot cope” or “I am anxious about …” perhaps even “I am feeling overwhelmed”. Anxiety and stress however, are quite different. Both Stress and Anxiety can be managed with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
