Pillar of Wellness: Environmental

Environmental wellness is an important pillar of wellness as it inspires us to live a lifestyle that is respectful of our surroundings. This realm encourages us to live in harmony with the Earth by taking action to protect it. Environmental well-being promotes an interaction with nature and your personal environment.

Good Health

Environmental wellness is related to the surroundings you occupy. This dimension of health connects your overall well-being to the health of your environment. Your environment, both your social, work, and natural surroundings, can greatly impact how you feel. As humans we all have a strong need for safety and security and look for those attributes in our environment.

It is also important to take care of the environments you live, work, socialize and play in.

We also look for physical comfort, such as an environment with the right temperature, and psychological comfort, where there is a mix of familiarity and stimulus. Consider how you might boost your comfort level!

The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment, is to get everybody involved.

Richard Rogers

It can be hard to feel good if you are surrounded by clutter and disorganization, or if you feel unsafe in your environment. Pollution, violence, garbage build-up, and water conservation are some of the factors affecting environmental wellness.

Ways to manage your environmental wellness include, participating in neighbourhood watches, recycling, planting a personal or community garden. Purchasing products with minimal packaging, avoiding littering. There are others that you could add on here this is not an exhaustive list.

Stimulating

How much noise do you tolerate daily? This noise or background noise at high levels can impact your health and wellbeing. Noise can increase stress, which over the long term can lead to disorders as serious as heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Getting outdoors and enjoying green spaces can help you feel better. Take advantage of good weather to play games with friends, study outside or simply relax.

Taking a trip into the countryside is an amazing experience no matter what the season. Consider the weather to dress appropriately however, do not let the weather be daunting to you. Embrace the seasons. Along with your physical space, consider your inner environment as well.

Arrange a walk with some friends in the countryside. This is a stunning country we live in. Make the most of each day.

Develop your sense of control, optimism, resilience, self-efficacy, as they can be learned and practiced. Set a positive intention for your interactions with the environment and people  wherever you go as they are linked to good health and well-being.

Environments that supports Well-being

The environment you are in can influence your mood, behaviour, and motivation. Studies reveal that rooms with bright light, both natural and artificial, can improve health outcomes such as depression, agitation, and sleep.

We have the opportunity to  choose our environment  that supports our perspective of or that suits our lifestyle. Whether at work or home or out and about take notice of the environment that  you are in or headed towards.

Most of us look at things but few actually see what we are looking at.

Become a person who  sees things, notices the environment  and not just  whips past it. Rack up experiences and share them with others soon you will change your social  surroundings as more people become like minded about  the environment we walk, play, work, and live in.

Visual “noise” increases stress. A cluttered, dirty, or confusing environment can cause us to feel worried, sad, or helpless.

Make a concerted effort to embrace your environment.

Studies show that even a short contact with nature can significantly reduce stress, reduce anger and fear, and increase pleasant feelings.  If you have views of trees or other plants or natural elements, place a comfortable chair where you can enjoy them.  You can also add indoor plants, aquariums, or art with a nature theme and get much of the same effect.
