Feeling overwhelmed can feel like wave after wave just continuing to batter you towards a hopelessness and depressive state. What are the signs and symptoms of being overwhelmed?

Recognizing the symptoms before it all crashes in on you is beneficial and with some tools and sessions, we can help you be aware of situations before they overwhelm you. Having said that, it does not infer that you will never be overwhelmed, but being equipped to deal with it will lessen the anxiety and recovery time.

Taking on too much

In these times of a reduced work due the economic issues facing the world, the driving of lean management principles and the quest for increasing profitability, it is easy for an employee to take on more than their normal workload. It could be they do not want to say no to their manager in case they too lose their job.

Manage Expectations

Sometimes our expectation of a particular outcome not being met could cause us to put pressure on ourselves and become overwhelmed. We sometimes feel a sense of failure when things do not turn out the way we expected.

When is good enough good enough?

We all want to do our best, but perfectionism has a cost to our mental health. That uneasy feeling of ‘our life as we know it will end’ if its not perfect.

Desire to always have it under control

Not realizing that we do not have the capacity to do it all ourselves and in the process, mistrusting everyone else who could do the job. By trying to do it all ourselves we rob our fellow colleagues of the opportunity to grow and use their skills or allow them to think for themselves.

Overcoming Feeling Overwhelmed

Ok, so we have a few and I say only a few, as there are a host of signs and symptoms that would make this a lengthy article. Here are some ways we can get out of being overwhelmed and stressed.

Take a step sideways

Gain a different perspective of what the real issue is. Adjust the filters we have on to view our world. Take a break go out and have a cuppa coffee or your preferred beverage and just focus on the aroma and taste. On your walk back to the office you may be surprised at the different perspective you may have. 

Asking for and Allowing Help

If you are feeling overwhelmed it is no shame, disgrace or failure to ask for help. You would be amazed at how many people are willing to help. Often, we are the problem that is disallowing help from happening through our limited thinking. We think they will say no, and so we do not ask. Just give it a try. Ask for help and be prepared to be amazed at the generosity that others are willing to provide.

Release some control allow your colleagues to grow

We can do the things that we really enjoy and let others do the same. You will be amazed at the innovative outcome that will dwarf your expectations you previously held. Allowing someone to reach their full potential is the most rewarding experience, it will change you forever.

Shut Out Noise

When we feel overwhelmed, it feels comforting to do something mindless to unwind and relax, the best thing we can do for ourselves when we come home feeling overwhelmed is to leave the TV and computer off.

We are bombarded by noise daily, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, You Tube etc as well as the advertisement, discussions meetings, workload and it all adds up in the day.
